Winter Skincare Tips: 4 Ways to Adjust Your Skin Routine

As you adjust your meal prepping techniques for the changing of the seasons, it’s important to change your skincare routine too. Winter weather brings with it frigid temperatures, blustery winds, and time spent indoors with forced-air heating, all of which can leave your skin feeling dry, dull, itchy, irritated and lackluster. This winter, keep your skin soft, supple, glowing and gorgeous with these four winter skincare tips.

1. Minimize Hot Baths and Showers

During the cold winter months, it may be tempting to indulge in some much needed self care practices. Although it’s perfectly fine to enjoy a hot shower or luxurious bubble bath after a long day, opt for cooler temperatures instead. Hot water quickly dries out the skin, so turn your bathroom faucets to “warm” instead of “hot” when it comes to taking showers and baths. Wash away the day with your favorite facial cleanser or body wash and enjoy a refreshing, revitalizing at-home spa night on the coldest of winter nights.

2. Exfoliate

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin. By removing old, dry and dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, skin is left feeling clean and free of clogged pores. When exfoliating, it’s important to remember to be gentle with your skin. Whether using a facial scrub, a body scrub or spa tools like a dry brush, use small circular motions without applying too much pressure. 3. Moisturize

Even if you swap your hot showers for warm baths, it’s still incredibly important to moisturize, especially after bathing and exfoliating. We’ve already established hot water can dry out your skin, but so can exfoliation. After enjoying a long luxurious bath or shower, apply moisturizer to your face with either a daytime moisturizer or nighttime moisturizer. Be sure to lather up your neck, body, feet and hands too. 4. Hydrate

Although it’s important to moisturize your skin on the outside, the best way to nourish your skin starts from the inside. Water is essential for our bodies to properly function and that includes our skin, which is why it’s critical to stay hydrated even during the cold winter months. It can be difficult to sip iced water when it’s so cold outside, so choose cool or room temperature water instead or warm up with a hot mug of tea like chamomile, English or green. You can even make a mug of broth and sprinkle in your favorite herbs and spices for something a little more flavorful.
