Our customers — yes, we’re talking about you — tend to be ahead of the curve when it comes to health and wellness. Whether it’s a 7-day herbal cleanse or a new quinoa snack, you’re always willing to try things before they become mainstream. It’s how we knew you’d be interested in adding CBD to your everyday routines.
But we couldn’t just give you any CBD product. No, we had to do this the Brandless way, with quality, sustainability, and wellness at the core of every decision. And now, we’re laying it all on the line and opening up about our wellness-focused approach to sourcing and testing, our preferred CBD extraction processes, and our partnerships with like-minded CBD brands.
When it comes to sourcing products for our CBD collection, we have a laundry list of boxes that need to be checked before it ends up on our shelves and in your Brandless Box. We look at everything from how a product has been tested for purity and potency to how it’s moved along the supply chain. Keeping in mind that CBD is derived from hemp, we monitor how it goes from plant to package by partnering with certified testing labs, visiting facilities to ensure all are produced under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and conducting in-house evaluations to understand how each product looks, tastes, and feels.
Are we being too careful? Well, yes… as a matter of fact, we are. It’s rare for retailers that sell other brands’ products to test and review them in this much detail. But nothing is too good for our customers — and we want to make sure that you’re getting the very best.
We assess the quality of our hemp-based products by looking at the following:
As with every other Brandless product, we want our CBD drops, balms, and capsules to be as sustainable as possible. This means we examine how the hemp used in our products is grown and harvested, and assess our suppliers’ abilities to source hemp from farms that are following what we consider to be good agricultural practices. We want to make sure their intentions and ethos align with our own, and even go so far as to examine product packaging from a sustainability perspective.
When hemp is harvested, it’s collected as biomass, dried, and then processed. And while there are a bunch of ways that CBD (and other cannabinoids) can be extracted from the biomass, there are three that we think are most safe and effective:
- Supercritical Carbon Dioxide: This method uses low temperatures and high pressures to bring carbon dioxide into a state between liquid and gas, therefore allowing it to extract compounds from the biomass. Because it makes use of CO2 (which is around us all the time — we breathe it out every day), it’s a very clean process. It’s also easy to control; different temperatures and pressures will help to extract different compounds from the plant, so you know exactly what you’re getting.
- Ethanol: This method requires the biomass to be soaked in an ethanol solution. Once that’s done, the biomass can be silted out, so all that remains is ethanol and other compounds — like CBD and terpenes. It’s an ancient, tried-and-true process that requires little energy.
- Lipid: This is similar to the ethanol method — except instead of soaking the biomass in an alcohol solution, it gets soaked in a lipid (fatty) compound, like coconut oil and heated. This method is not only clean, but also very gentle. Plus, it can also extract waxes, chlorophyll, and other nutrients that could benefit the human body.
We prioritize clean, plant-based ingredients that can contribute to your mental, spiritual, and physical wellbeing. Our products contain only the things that matter, and we make sure that all ingredients are synergistic and stable (meaning they’re able to survive throughout the shelf life of a product). Of course, we also assess our CBD products for performance. Does it look good, feel good, and taste good? If we say yes across the board, we know we’ve found a winner.
At this point, you’re probably wondering who could possibly jump through all these quality hoops. Well, the good news is that awesome brands do exist. We’ve partnered with ones that not only meet our standards, but also have an inspiring CBD journey to share. We want to connect you with the brands who are motivated by health and wellness, and genuinely want to help people achieve a sense of balance in their lives. We also look for brands that complement each other, so that we can give you a variety of CBD products to choose from.
We’re currently working to create our own line of CBD products that are specially formulated with you in mind. But until then, you can experiment with our curated collection of ingestibles and topicals — we’ve taken the guesswork out so that you can shop with ease and know that you’re choosing only the very best.
