7 Foods to Eat While on a Cleanse

Whether you are returning from an indulgent vacation, weekend away or are just feeling slightly irregular, one way to hit the reset button is by doing a cleanse! Here are seven foods that best complement a 7-day cleanse.

#1 Berries

If you experience a sweet tooth on your cleanse, snag some berries. Blackberries, blueberries raspberries and strawberries are all relatively low in sugar and high in fiber, so your body will feel satiated and your sweet tooth satisfied.

Tip: Add a spoonful (or two) of your favorite nut or seed butter like peanut butter, almond butter, sunflower seed butter or hazelnut spread and enjoy a sweet yet savory snack or dessert.

#2 Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables such as arugula, bok choy, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens and kale are all high in fiber. The fiber found in these vegetables help nourish the good gut bacteria found within the gut microbiome, which can ultimately support smooth digestion.

#3 Fermented Foods

Fermented foods like apple cider vinegar, beet kvass, coconut kefir, fermented tempeh, kimchi, kombucha and raw sauerkraut help feed digestive enzymes, ultimately keeping the gut populated with good gut flora. When shopping for fermented foods, look for foods that are raw and chilled as these conditions allow the good kind of gut bacteria to live and thrive.

Tip: High temperatures can kill these bacteria-rich enzymes, so avoid cooking any of these foods.

#4 Herbs

Herbs and spices are great to give meals an added kick of flavor, but some herbs in particular are great for a cleanse including: cayenne, fennel seeds, oregano and peppermint. Leafy Greens

A great way to incorporate more leafy greens is by adding them to breakfast omelets, salads, smoothies and stir fries.

#6 Omega-3s

Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as certain kinds of fish (mackerel, salmon), avocados, extra-virgin olive oil, flax seeds, leafy greens, and walnuts can help with inflammation within the body. However, if you are looking for an easier way to obtain omega-3 fatty acids, then consider supplementing with an omega-3 fish oil supplement.

#7 Nuts and Seeds

A number of nuts and seeds, specifically chia seeds, flax seeds, and hemp seeds are a good source  of fiber, which like fermented foods, promote digestion, aiding in toxin removal, which can complement your cleanse.

#8 Water

Technically water is not a food, and while it’s critical when you aren’t cleansing, it’s even more so when you are. Water keeps your cells hydrated and your body’s systems running properly.

Tip: Start the morning with a glass of room temperature lemon water or to give your water a burst of flavor throughout the day. Lemon is naturally alkalising to the human body, which is beneficial when completing a cleanse. If you prefer a warm beverage, make a mug of chamomile or dandelion tea both of which both of which are soothing.

Now that you know some of the best foods to eat and enjoy when you are on a cleanse, make sure you don’t undo all of your work, by avoiding:
